Dearest Circlers,
Since I know you all were dying to know… I have taken the liberty of researching the origins of the tuba… for you!
It’s one of those cartoon instruments that really has no reason to exist except that someone had a quirky sense of humor and wanted to see what sort of ridiculous looking thing musicians could be persuaded to carry around. Musicians are gullible.
On the other side of the spectrum (from tubas, that is), the kazoo (not technically related to the tuba except that it requires the musician’s breath to make noise… but with a kazoo, the musician hums into the instrument and with a tuba the musician makes farting noises with his/her mouth) is tiny, very portable, with a much more interesting… um… sound.
Weird.
Okay… so speaking of cartoon instruments:
I have always felt sorry for the “tubaist” in a marching band. What a pain in the ass to carry that thing around!
Same with the bass drum (and since I know you’d want it….here’s a link for the BIGGEST bass drum in a marching band: http://www.purdue.edu/bands/aamb/bbd.html). By the way, I think it’s totally cheating to put a “Marching Band” instrument on a cart. Tubaists don’t get carts. Where’s the fairness?
Okay, back to cartoon instruments:
The ukulele is the newest member of my family. Technically, it belongs to Rahima. The Ozark Sufi Camp has a ukulele orchestra, which provided some serious inspiration… so now everyone in my house is developing ukulele fingertip calluses.
NOTE: The best ukulele song is NOT “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” It is actually “Moonshadow” by Cat Stevens. I’m telling you.
You absolutely MUST go acquire a uke so you can play this song!
My chords for it: G C D (and the weird bridge near the end: A D and maybe something else strange thrown in there once or twice).
Super Sweet!
