Friday November 29th – 2013th annual “Buy Nothing Day!” – skip the crowds, donate your money to a homeless pygmy shelter in Paraguay, stay home and enjoy a peaceful contemplative day filled with visions of world peace and infinite kindness.

For your pure joy, here’s my ad lib version of my family’s favorite cookie recipe:
1/2 cup butter (salted)
1/2 cup peanut butter (crunchy)
soften and mix them together…
add 3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar (because we feel it is important to honor all the colors of sugar and treat them all with respect and gratitude)
3 raw eggs (from a real live chicken who would prefer not to be eaten… VERY IMPORTANT… cookies taste better when made with eggs from happy chickens…)
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda (the orange box with an arm holding a hammer)
mix it all up til nice and smooth… or have your slave children mix it for you
add 2 cups and a sprinkle more of gluten-full, but unbleached flour…
have the strongest member of your household mix it up.
add an entire package of miniature chocolate chips (minus the handful you eat immediately)…
mix it up yourself, don’t ask anyone else to do it… at this point it’s mean to ask someone else to tackle this difficult task.
cover your cookie sheets with parchment paper (a genius baker’s tool)
drop about 1 tablespoon of cookie dough onto the tray…
(I usually fit 15 on a tray)
bake them at 375 degrees fahrenheit for about 10 minutes (watch them! they should look dry and ever so slightly golden around the edges)
take them out of the oven and let them sit for 1 minute before putting them on wire racks to cool entirely.
Unless you’re impatient, in which case, eat them directly off the tray and keep iced coffee close by to cool your scorched mouth.
Enjoy!
Love to all,
Sára

Dear Ones,

Please consider me the fickle, non-committal, whimsical, folly-following networker. Lots of changes are blowing in this early autumn wind. Pay close attention!

PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING CIRCLES IN TEMPORARY LIMBO LAND IF NOT COMPLETELY CANCELLED… I’ll let you know if/when the
status changes:
~ NO SUFI CIRCLE MONDAYS
~ NO MAMA SING
~ NO SUNRISE RANCH DANCE
~ NO SUFI STUDY CIRCLE TUESDAYS

THESE ONES ARE STILL HAPPENING… for now. I’ll let you know if/when the status changes on these too:

It’s so helpful to have experienced folks in the mix. Please join us!

Thursday, September 19th – NO DANCE in FORT COLLINS – I’ll be up the hill getting ready for the Women’s Retreat… sorry.

DANCING with the GODDESS WOMEN’s RETREAT – Friday the 20th to Monday the 23rd – Ladies, it’s time to get registered! Time is running out. This retreat is always fun, enriching, diverse, empowering, inspiring… Lots of great leaders, gorgeous location, delicious food, and Shawn does all the dishes for the entire time! – More info and on-line payment option here: http://trigoddess.org/special-events/

That’s it! Then I’m out of the country until mid-October. There will be no dances, chants or Sufi stuff in my absence…. well… at least not the actual things in the actual places… or the actual ways that I typically do things.

QUESTION: Should I plan to hold a Sufi Meditation Retreat at the end of February next year? It’s time to get planning if I’m going to do it. And time to let it go if not.

RETREAT ANNOUNCEMENTS

CHANT RETREAT, 2014 – I’ve asked Allaudin Ottinger to come facilitate chant retreat with me and he said YES!!!! – April 25 to 27 – I’m super excited to share leadership with Allaudin. He is an excellent musician, zikr and dance leader, drummer, and an enthusiastic, dedicated, inspiring teacher in the Ruhaniat. Mark your calendar! Or just go sign up: http://trigoddess.org/special-events/

SUFI YOUTH JAM, 2014 – The Sufi Ruhaniat International Youth Council is hosting a retreat for the next generation of Universal Peace Dancers and Sufi enthusiasts. April 29 to May 4th – I’m delighted to be an organizer for this event and to be holding it here in Colorado! More info and registration info here: http://trigoddess.org/special-events/ and please do share this info with young adults in your life.

On a completely unrelated note:
Valley View Hot Springs (a.k.a. Orient Land Trust) near Villa Grove is the absolute best place to get sunshine on your ENTIRE body! I highly recommend it. Also, it’s an excellent opportunity to see all the hidden tattoos people are sporting all the time. We’re such a sneaky culture. It’s rare to see tattoos on people’s faces and hands. Do you ever long for a Maori-type culture that encourages (if not requires) facial tattoos?

Yet another unrelated note:
If you set up a high-tech microphone and recorder underneath a cottonwood tree in Colorado when the wind is blowing between 10 and 15 miles per hour, record 90 seconds, play it backward and you’ll hear something like this:
“take your money to las vegas… elvis will meet you at the gate… he carries the wisdom of the spheres… hear and obey…”

See you at a Dance, I reckon.
Blowing in the breeze,
Sara

Harry Potter Goes to Disneyland

Is the summer making you dizzy?

Delirious?
Delighted?
Derisive?
Just kidding about that last one.
Colorado is such a glorious, gorgeous, inspiringly… natural… place in the summertime. Hurray for sunflowers, ripening tomatoes, flowing rivers, thunderstorms, lemonade, bicycles, swimming holes, and slugs in abundance!
My question for you:
Where do slugs come from?
They’ve shown up in our garden in full force, magically oozing out from under the cardboard weed barrier! Are they actually children of cardboard? Or have they been hibernating under the topsoil for decades and decades until exactly the right conditions inspire them to awake, arise, and start their malicious nibbling on the tender cilantro shoots?
Are they the devil-spawn children of the unmanifest, latent carcass of the unsprouted potato planted there three years ago that never had the courage to let its eyes mature into actual roots?
Or… are they little alien babies who don’t have quite the creative genius for crop circles so they resign themselves to leaving vile trails of slug slime on the pepper plants?
Someone please enlighten me.
While you’re contemplating slugs… let’s dance! And sing! And revel in all other aspects of summer.

REMINDER – The women’s dance in Denver no longer exists. The slugs have taken its soul into the center of the earth.

Hey Gentlemen, what do you do with your time while your lady loves are in the mountains sitting in hot tubs and gossiping?
Do you need pointers?

Here are my top 5 suggestions for manly entertainment:
1. The Hunt Club (okay, it’s a bit sleazy, but I have heard rumors that y’all like boobies, so…)
2. Rent movies for a weekend marathon: Dirty Harry, Rambo, Fight Club, Steel Magnolias (Tim’s suggestion), Strange Brew, The Fast and the Furious
3. Dirt Bike race track… I haven’t been there myself because I have too much estrogen in my blood stream, but here’s a link: http://www.vdrmx.com/
4. Drink beer. The darker the better. And since I know the options are daunting, here’s a guide: http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/city/53
5. ..and… my last brilliant idea for you… Visit Johnson’s Corner for a world famous cinnamon roll, a trucker’s shower and laundry facilities… PLUS… BONUS!!! There’s a big sign on the next-door-neighboring motel that says “Oriental Massage.” What’s not to like? I’ll hand deliver a personalized thank you note to any of you men who actually go check it out and tell me about it.

Love to every single one of you!
Sara

Darling Beloved Gorgeous Magnificent Community,
We are gathered here today, scattered to the far corners of this sweet earth (which ironically has no corners because it’s ROUND), to honor the gift of our existence, the radiant brilliance of the world around and within us… to delight and suffer through every moment of life! The Rapture!
Oh, I have a little tip for you!
To make your existence more and more excellent, find exactly the right hair products!
You think I’m joking?
I’m not!
Even if you are completely bald (not naming names…), you can shine up that dome to sparkling perfection and increase your daily joy ten-fold!
Even if you have a buzz cut (not naming names…), you can add a little coconut oil to that fuzzball and increase your daily delight in spades!
Even if you have long, luxurious blond hair with glowing waves that catch the sun just so (not naming names, cause I don’t know any of your names…), and every woman you know hates you for your glorious locks… you can shave it off inviting more feminine love and simplifying your daily routine thereby giving you more and more time and energy to ride go-karts without getting that mop tangled in the fan belt.
Really… the right hair is the key to infinite happiness.
Go-karts help too.

Spiritual Mentoring – I’ve been thinking about getting another group started. Interested? Curious? Confused? Desperately in need? Let’s talk. – I also offer one-on-one Mentoring. Give a call or e-mail me for more info.

Don’t you love when every day is like a Bikram Yoga class?
We go to hot springs, saunas, have scalding hot showers… then the weather gives us the heat we seek, turning our cars into our own private saunas and we whine about it.
Not me. I’m LOVING IT!!!
Here’s my suggested spiritual practice for the rest of the summer: sweat.
What? You think that’s not a practice? Think of the magic, the mysterious alchemy, the genius of this divine plan! Our bodies are so wise! And slippery!
Each morning, set an intention to LOVE the sweat.
Every evening, give heartfelt thanks for the sweat.
Whenever it occurs to you to curse the heat, take a nice refreshing sip of lemonade (or if you don’t like lemonade, turn it into lemons) and sing a sweaty song unto the Lord and Lady! Praise Jesus and Alleluia for sweat glands! Hare Krishna and Jai Ram for the power of the scorching Sun!
Three cheers for the light, the heat and the excellent excuse to drink margaritas!

Hey, I just found out the Chocolate Café in Old Town Fort Collins is air conditioned. Chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, chocolate soufflé, chocolate martinis! That’ll send your summertime blues running for the burning hills. For some reason, I’ve never seen any men in there. Why don’t men like chocolate?
Love and cheery sunlight to all!

Please bear with me while I say…
peanuts are a waste of a nut. I really don’t like them and I’m not sure why. Well, maybe they’re just boring. Nuts should be nutty, not boring. Eating peanuts is like going into a Baskin Robbins and ordering vanilla ice cream. Why would you do that? Better to eat pistachio ice cream with caramel swirls, chocolate brownies, shredded coconut, and toffee chips. Make the calories REALLY worthwhile!
I must confess, I am the evil person who goes through a bag of trailmix and eats everything EXCEPT the peanuts. I do feel sorry for the people who live with me and have to suffer through my quirky particularity AND the bag full of peanuts!
If I go see a Catholic priest and confess my selfish eccentricities… how many Hail Marys do you suppose would absolve me?
Want to see something disturbing?
I’m going to paint my living room pink and purple.
Aren’t you glad I write these mailers late at night when my intelligent brain has shut down?!
Sorry.
See you in a dance or chant circle, I hope.
LOVE!
Sara

Dearest Circlers,
Since I know you all were dying to know… I have taken the liberty of researching the origins of the tuba… for you!
It’s one of those cartoon instruments that really has no reason to exist except that someone had a quirky sense of humor and wanted to see what sort of ridiculous looking thing musicians could be persuaded to carry around. Musicians are gullible.
On the other side of the spectrum (from tubas, that is), the kazoo (not technically related to the tuba except that it requires the musician’s breath to make noise… but with a kazoo, the musician hums into the instrument and with a tuba the musician makes farting noises with his/her mouth) is tiny, very portable, with a much more interesting… um… sound.
Weird.
Okay… so speaking of cartoon instruments:
I have always felt sorry for the “tubaist” in a marching band. What a pain in the ass to carry that thing around!
Same with the bass drum (and since I know you’d want it….here’s a link for the BIGGEST bass drum in a marching band: http://www.purdue.edu/bands/aamb/bbd.html). By the way, I think it’s totally cheating to put a “Marching Band” instrument on a cart. Tubaists don’t get carts. Where’s the fairness?
Okay, back to cartoon instruments:
The ukulele is the newest member of my family. Technically, it belongs to Rahima. The Ozark Sufi Camp has a ukulele orchestra, which provided some serious inspiration… so now everyone in my house is developing ukulele fingertip calluses.
NOTE: The best ukulele song is NOT “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” It is actually “Moonshadow” by Cat Stevens. I’m telling you.
You absolutely MUST go acquire a uke so you can play this song!
My chords for it: G C D (and the weird bridge near the end: A D and maybe something else strange thrown in there once or twice).
Super Sweet!

Time for this installment of Sara’s Schedule of Events!

Dear Sweetie Pie Honey Dumplings,
I have often wondered why all pet names are related to sugary things…even if the sugary things don’t make any sense. Why is that?
Why don’t we nickname each other things like:
Kale Chip or Pizza Pie?
It also seems important to pet name each other edible things. I think that’s weird.
What about:
Sunshine Daffodil or Grass Clippings or Teacup?

On an unrelated note:
I know I have told all of you that I plan to come back as a domesticated cat living with a lovely lesbian couple in post-mummification Egypt… but I have changed my mind.
Too many conditional considerations with domesticated cat life. I have decided to come back as a sea sponge. I am getting some mixed responses when informing my friends of this plan… but there are so many undeniable perks including: no furballs, no tail to get caught in doors, no fear of water, no fear of anything for that matter. After sharing this ambition with the Fantastic Fairy Queen Ashera, she showed me this AMAZING video.
Please enjoy!

Useful life tip from my own personal experience:
If you want to give yourself a haircut all yourself, make sure your arms are LONGER than your hair. It’s important. But you know, some things are better NOT to do all by yourself: brain surgery, back massages, carburetor priming, tax preparation, criminal defense in drug-related cases, manicures on your dominant hand, etc.
I do not know all of these from personal experience, but I’m feeling relatively confident in including all of them here.

It is my sincere wish for all of you to be free from stress of all forms.
Love and Joy!
Sara
