| Dear Community, This precious, beautiful life! What a blessing and a privilege to be conscious, breathing the shining atmosphere of this moment with all of you! Gratitude and awe. Those are the only reasonable attitudes in response to this miraculous existence. Prayer, song, and keen awareness are the natural expression if we’re really tuning into the moment. I’ve had a few interactions with friends this week that include someone asking me, “what is zikr?” Here’s what I have to say about that right now: “Zikr” is a prayer of “remembrance.” It is a spiritual practice that tries to turn our awareness and our felt experience away from confusion toward The Real. While “Zikr” as a spiritual activity can take many forms, the essence of it, the purpose and intention is to forget the limitations of “self,” forget the distractions of the temporary world, and remember, remember, remember the All-Pervading Divinity that is the Truth of our being. Now…that said…what does it look like and what do we DO for a Zikr evening at Sára’s house? It’s a lot of music…chanting usually in Arabic…recitations of phrases and attributes of God, Allah, The One…An opening Invocation, prayer, and breath to set the tone…all told about two hours of practice. Everyone is welcome to join me…I do my best to explain things and help it feel accessible for folks…and I also do my best to just dive into the Zikr practice in the ways that nourish my own heart and soul. We will be seated for the evening Zikr. If you’d like to join me, please come with the intention to participate fully, sing along, say the prayers…be open to the experience and see what happens.
